I married a devoted Red Sox fan, and it’s really fun to watch them win.

Radiohead revisited

October 14, 2007 at 2:10 am (Uncategorized) (, , )

I think the new Radiohead album deserves a post all to itself. Did I mention how amazing this piece of music is?

My favorite song is called “All I Need.” It is electronica with a soul. It’s Thom Yorke at its absolute best. It’s aching piano and gentle xylophone. It’s a great beat, it’s simple, memorable lyrics, it’s a perfect melody.

When those pianos slink in at 2 and a half minutes, then the drums kick, I feel my brain expanding and my heart quickening. I mourn the song when it is over.

It is very rare that I love a song this much. I heard it on sattelite and instantly made up my mind to buy the album. The rest of the CD is so beautiful.

I never understood why people thought Radiohead was so great. I always thought they took themselves too seriously and their music was too distant and too abstract.

I take it all back.

This album is more personal and more intensely crafted and more gloriously gorgeous than anything I’ve heard in so long.

I’m in love.

In Rainbows, Al Gore, catching thieves, etc…

October 12, 2007 at 4:37 pm (Uncategorized) (, , , , , , , , , , , )

A lot has happened, so I will try to keep it short.

1. AL GORE WON THE NOBEL PRIZE! YAYYY!! I had goosebumps for ten minutes after I heard the news. I’m so proud. My Al Gore sticker is getting old and faded on my car. I was going to take it off, but now I think I’ll just buy a fresh one. :-D

2. The new Radiohead album is WONDERFUL. I’ve never been a big fan of Radiohead. There are a few songs I really like: Creep, Fake Plastic Trees, and a few others. But they are not my usual cup of tea. But I heard the new single, All I Need, and it was so straightforward and so lovely and so…uh…un-Radioheadlike, that I bought the CD. The best thing is, the band only released it online, and the customer chooses their own price. I paid $5 for mine. :-D You have to hear All I Need. It’s so pretty and simple. Great beat, snappy little bass line, haunting vocals…it’s great.

3. Trent Reznor dropped his record label. THIS IS HUGE! HUUUUUGE! That means Trent can do whatever he wants, whenever he wants, with no limitations on anything. I’m so excited. In the last five years, Trent has really gone out of his way to be good to his fans. This is the next step. There is no middleman now. It’s so cool. I CAN’T WAIT to see what he does without having to answer to the money-grubbing corporate fatcats.

4. I caught a shoplifter yesterday. Big time. I came in and 4 girls were sitting at the listening stations. They had made a BIG mess. BIG. CDs everywhere and books everywhere. I asked them to clean up the CDs. They basically just threw a token CD into the wrong place and left. I told them not to come back (MAN THIS SONG IS SO GREAT!!! AHHH!) and they called me a fat bitch. I called security to have them thrown off the property. I went back to clean up and low and behold, I found two empty CD cases. Security brought all the girls back, and one of them threw the CD’s on the floor and took off running down the escalator. She was caught. She was also 14. The police came, and it was an episode. The worst part was, the girl’s mom died two weeks ago. From AIDS. Ya know, I feel really bad for her. I can’t imagine what it must be like to lose your mother. She’s obviously acting out. The cop who came to get her was really nice. (Officer Pleasant was his name. Really.) He told me he is going to get her into a program for at-risk first-time offenders. I hope she stays in school and stops stealing and realizes that breaking the law is stupid.

5. MAN THIS ALBUM IS GREAT!
